Why We Can Never Fully Praise Allah

Among the deepest truths ever spoken by a servant of Allah is the realization that no matter how much we worship, thank, or praise Allah, The greatness remains beyond our ability to fully describe. This meaning is beautifully reflected in the supplications attributed to Prophet Dawud peace be upon him. The prophet whose voice shook mountains with remembrance and whose heart overflowed with gratitude.

Allah says about him in the Quran,

“And We certainly gave Dawud from Us bounty. [We said], “O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well].” And We made pliable for him iron” Surah Saba (34:10)
Translated Verse from Arabic to English

Imagine a servant so devoted that even nature joined him in glorifying Allah. Yet despite such worship, even prophet Dawud peace be upon him understood that Allah can never truly be praised as He deserves.

Human language is limited. We praise things by comparing them to what we know, the strongest mountain, the brightest star, the deepest ocean, but Allah is beyond comparison. Every word we use falls short because our minds themselves are limited creations. A person may spend every breath thanking Allah for sight, for rain, for mercy, for forgiveness, for life itself. Yet even the ability to say “Alhamdulillah” is another blessing requiring more gratitude.

This is why scholars say gratitude itself becomes an endless circle you thank Allah for one blessing, then must thank Him again for the ability to thank Him.

One of the most powerful statements found in the supplications of the prophet Dawud peace be upon him, “My Lord, how can I thank You properly when my gratitude itself is a blessing from You?”

Allah answered him, "Now you have truly thanked Me, O Dawud" (meaning; by realizing that even the capacity to be grateful comes from Allah).

This understanding transforms worship from pride into humility. The believer stops counting deeds and begins realizing, every prayer was enabled by Allah, every tear of repentance was allowed by Allah, every good action was guided by Allah. Without Him, the servant could do nothing.

The Messenger of Allah Muhammad ﷺ, made this reality even clearer in one of the most profound supplications, “I cannot praise You enough. You are as You have praised Yourself.”

This statement is extraordinary. The greatest worshipper of Allah, the most eloquent human being, admitted that Allah’s perfection surpasses all praise. No tongue can encompass Him. No poetry can fully honor Him. No act of worship reaches His true majesty. This is not a deficiency in worship, it is proof of Allah’s infinite greatness.

Some people fear their worship is too small. Their gratitude feels incomplete, but Allah never asked human beings to be infinite. He asked them to be sincere.

A single honest Subhan-Allah from a humble heart is more beloved than mountains of empty words. Allah loves servants who recognize His perfection while recognizing their own need.

The beauty of “Alhamdulillah”. The phrase is short, yet it contains pearls of meaning. It means, all praise belongs to Allah. While we know that every blessing comes from Allah, every perfection belongs to Allah & every gratitude returns to Allah.

“Say, If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it in [continual] supplement."
Surah Al-Kahf (18:109)
Translated Verse from Arabic to English

To stand under the night sky and realize, the one who created galaxies also hears whispered duas. To understand, the Lord praised by angels beyond number still accepts the praise of weak human tongues. This is the secret of the righteous, the more they knew Allah, the more humble they became.

Reflection, If the kings and sons of kings knew of the paradise we are in, they would fight us with swords for it & there is a paradise in this world, whoever does not enter it will not enter the paradise of the Hereafter, because true knowledge of Allah does not create arrogance. It creates awe.

We will never fully praise Allah, not because praise is useless, but because His perfection is limitless. Every act of worship is like placing a drop into an endless ocean. Yet Allah, in His mercy, accepts those drops. He multiplies them. He loves them. And He rewards them beyond imagination.

So continue saying Alhamdulillah, Subhan-Allah, Allahu Akbar, Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilaih

Not because your words can encompass Allah, but because your soul was created to return to Him.

"Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision, and He is the Subtle, the Acquainted"
Surah Al- An'Am (6:103)

سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك أشهد ان لا اله الا انت استغفرك وأتوب اليك
