The global energy landscape is shaking up, and Egypt just dropped a huge announcement that is sending shockwaves through the markets.
In a big win for the North African nation, Egypt has officially uncovered its largest western desert oil and gas discovery in 15 years. As global oil and gas prices skyrocket due to geopolitical tensions, this couldn't have come at a better time. Here is what you need to know about this discovery.
Estimates for the newly discovered site reveal staggering figures, 330 billion cubic feet of natural gas, and roughly 70 million barrels of crude oil. The discovery was made at the Bustan South 1X exploratory well using the Egyptian Drilling Company’s EDC 9 rig. The project is spearheaded by Agiba Petroleum Company, a high powered joint venture between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Italian energy giant Eni.
Usually, when a country strikes oil or gas, it takes years and billions of dollars in infrastructure before a single drop hits the market, but Egypt played this perfectly.
The Bustan South 1X well is located just 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) away from existing pipelines and production facilities.
What does that mean? It means Egypt can bypass the high expenses and delays. They are launching a rapid development plan to hook this giant new energy source straight into the national grid almost immediately, with barely any extra spending required. This is exactly what the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources intended. By giving smart incentives to international partners to explore areas right next to existing infrastructure, they’ve cut costs and dramatically shortened the time it takes to get fuel from deep underground into the economy.
To understand why this is a big deal, look at the global stage. Since the start of 2026 (1447), Brent crude prices surged by more than 50%, while the World Bank reports that global energy prices are 24% higher than last year. Meanwhile, natural gas prices in Europe are spiking over fears of Mediterranean supply disruptions. Now Egypt is stepping up as a reliable, energy powerhouse. Just last month, Eni announced a staggering two trillion cubic feet gas discovery off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. Agiba’s Western Desert operations have also been on a roll, pushing their crude output to a three year high of 32,000 barrels per day.
By securing roughly 70 million barrels of oil right in its backyard, Egypt is not only insulating itself from global market shocks but is positioning itself as an energy hub for the region and Europe.
