of Yemen’s underfunded clinics. It isn't crying. Crying takes energy. Crying requires breath, muscle and a flicker of hope. No, the sound of a starving child is a silent, shallow gasp. It is the sound of a body fading away. Right now, millions of children in Yemen are locked in a daily battle against acute and chronic malnutrition. Their bodies are literally consuming themselves just to keep their hearts beating, but amidst this devastating situation, a movement is sparking hope. It’s YUCiP. To understand the depth of this crisis, one must understand the two ways hunger attacks a child's body. Yemen's children are currently being hollowed out by a deadly combination of both acute and chronic malnutrition. Acute malnutrition is a sudden, rapid weight loss that leaves children looking like frail skeletons. It occurs when a child simply has no food to eat. Their muscles waste away, their immune systems collapse and their organs begin to shut down. Today, approximately 500,000 children in Yemen suffer from severe acute malnutrition (severe wasting). Without immediate intervention, most children won't survive.
While acute malnutrition threatens a child's next 24 hours, chronic malnutrition permanently compromises their entire life. Driven by months and years of a repetitive, nutrient deficient diet, chronic malnutrition results in stunting. Nearly half of all children under the age of five in Yemen are permanently stunted. Their bones stop growing and their brains fail to fully develop. It is a silent thief that ensures even if a child survives the conflict, they may never reach their full physical or cognitive potential.
How do you fight a crisis of this scale? You start with one child, one week at a time.
