Planning a trip to or from Saudi Arabia soon? You might want to double check how you pack your portable chargers.
Saudi Arabia’s aviation watchdog, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), has officially tightened the rules on carrying and using power banks aboard flights. The updated guidelines align directly with new international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to eliminate fire risks caused by lithium batteries.
If you don’t want your gadgets confiscated or face delays at airport security here is what you need to know.
To keep flights safe, GACA has rolled out four major updates that every passenger must follow. You are completely banned from packing power banks in your checked luggage. They must be kept in your carry on or hand luggage so flight crews can respond immediately if a battery overheats. Each Passenger is limited to carrying a maximum of two power banks.
You are strictly prohibited from plugging in and recharging your power bank while inside the aircraft. GACA explicitly discourages passengers from using power banks to charge their phones, laptops or tablets during flights.
It all comes down to safety. Power banks run on lithium ion batteries, which can overheat, catch fire or even explode under certain cabin pressure conditions if they are damaged or low quality. By keeping them restricted to the cabin and limiting their use, aviation authorities can significantly lower the risk of mid air emergencies.
Saudi authorities are actively cracking down on anyone breaking aviation laws. GACA recently revealed that they handed out over 609 violations, resulting in fines totaling more than SR13.8 million ($3.6 million) against airlines, companies and individuals who failed to comply with strict safety and passenger regulations.
Quick checklist for your next flight to Saudi Arabia. Keep your portable chargers out of your large suitcases. Count your power banks, leave any extras at home if you have more than two. Make sure your phone is fully charged before you board so you don't rely on a power bank midflight.
By staying informed and packing smart, you can ensure a smooth, stress free travel experience through Saudi airports. Safe travels!
