The pillars of Khabib's style isn't a collection of random moves, it’s a linear progression of misery for the opponent.
First, it's close the distance safely and use strikes to hide the entry. Second, force clinch or cage contact and neutralize the opponent's striking tools. Third, chain wrestle nonstop and if one takedown fails, the next three are already coming. Fourth, smother & break and once on the ground, remove all daylight fully securing the submission hold or pin leaving the opponent trapped with no room to break free or escape, breaking their hope.
The double leg takedown (the entry).
Khabib’s double leg isn’t a flashy blast double. It’s a calculated invasion of space.
The mechanics oil change, drop your hips lower than theirs while keeping your back straight. Penetration step, your lead foot must land deep between their feet. The head position, this is crucial, your head stays pressed to their ribs. This prevents the guillotine choke and provides leverage to drive them over. The finisher, don't just lift, drive at a 45° angle. If they don't go down immediately, Khabib runs his feet until they do.
The wall of death, cage control. While others wrestle in the center of the mat, Khabib uses the fence as a third limb.
By pinning an opponent against the cage, Khabib removes their ability to sprawl or move backward. He uses his shoulder to grind into their chin, making it impossible for them to breathe comfortably, while his hips block any escape routes.
The chain wrestling loop, the biggest mistake beginners make is stopping after a failed shot. In Khabib's system, a failed takedown is just the beginning of the chain. If the double leg fails, he switches to a single leg. If they balance, he transitions to a body lock. If they try to turn, he hits an inside trip. He never stops moving until the opponent's gas tank hits zero.
Ground dominance, removing the air
once the fight hits the floor, Khabib employs smothering pressure. This isn't just holding someone, it's active weight distribution. The leg triangle, Khabib often traps the opponent's legs with his own, preventing them from using their hips to stand up. Wrist control, by pinning an opponent’s hand to the mat or behind their back, he renders them defenseless against the ground and pound.
