The Forgotten Sunnah, Reviving the Art of Archery

The rush of an arrow, the snap of the bowstring and the satisfying thud of hitting the target, archery is more than
just an ancient sport. In Islamic tradition, archery (ar-rimayah) is a Sunnah, a highly recommended practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The Prophet ﷺ viewed archery as a way to build a strong body, a sharp mind and a disciplined soul. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ loved archery and constantly encouraged his followers to learn it. In the Quran, Allah commands believers to gather strength, and the Prophet ﷺ explicitly explained what that strength meant "Prepare to meet them with as much strength as you can afford. Strength consists in archery. Strength consists in archery. Strength consists in archery."
(Sahih Muslim)

The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by some people of the tribe of Aslam practicing archery (the throwing of arrows) Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "O offspring of Ishmael! Practice archery (arrow throwing) as your father was a great archer (arrow thrower). I am with (on the side of) the son of so and so." Hearing that, one of the two teams stopped throwing. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked them, "Why are you not throwing?" They replied, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! How shall we throw when you are with the opposite team?" He said, "Throw, for I am with you all."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari).

In Islam, keeping this tradition alive is a beautiful way of the Prophet's lifestyle. Archery benefits the mind, body and soul. To hit a target, you have to quiet your mind, control your breathing and block out the distractions. This intense focus is very similar to the concentration (khushu) needed during daily prayers. It teaches you how to calm your mind under pressure.

Archery is a fantastic workout. Pulling back a heavy bowstring builds, strong shoulders, back and arm muscles. A stable core and great body posture. Excellent hand eye coordination.

If you are angry, rushed or frustrated, you will miss the target. Archery forces you to slow down, accept your mistakes when you miss and calmly try again. It is a daily lesson in patience.

Usually, playing games is just seen as a way to pass the time. However, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah will surely admit three into Paradise by a single arrow. Its maker who seeks good by his making it, the one who shoots it and the one who holds arrows for him." And he said: "Practice archery and practice riding, and the you should practice archery is more beloved to me than that you should ride. All idle pastimes that the Muslim man engages in are falsehood, except for his shooting of his bow, his training of his horse and his playing with his wife, for they are from truth."

When you practice archery with the intention of following the Sunnah, the sport actually becomes a form of worship. Historically, Muslim archers would even say Bismillah (In the name of Allah) before releasing an arrow, turning a physical sport into a remembrance of Allah.

In our modern world of smartphones and desk jobs, archery is the perfect escape. It gets you moving, improves your posture and forces you to unplug and focus on a single point. By picking up a bow today, you aren't just starting a new hobby, you are reviving a beautiful, centuries old tradition aimed at mastering your body, mind and soul.
