You’re standing in the grocery store aisle, looking at a wall of golden jars. They all have cute pictures of bees, and they all use words like pure or natural, but the truth is alot of the honey on store shelves isn't actually 100% honey. In fact, honey is one of the most counterfeited foods in the world. Factories often mix a little bit of real honey with cheap, sugary syrups to make a bigger profit. So, how do you know if you are buying real, healthy honey or just overpriced sugar water? Real honey comes straight from a beehive. Bees collect nectar from flowers, make honey and store it. It is packed with natural health benefits, antioxidants and vitamins.
Fake Honey is made in a factory. It is real honey that has been watered down and mixed with cheap sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup, rice syrup or cane sugar. It has almost no health benefits.
A science lab is the best way to find out if your honey is real, but you can try this test. The water test, drop a spoonful of honey into a glass of water. Real honey is dense. It will sink straight to the bottom in a solid lump without dissolving, but fake honey is watery. It will start dissolving into the water right away.
Avoid buying fake honey by reading the ingredients label. It should say exactly one thing honey. If you see glucose syrup, corn syrup or fructose put it back on the shelf. Skip the giant supermarkets and buy your honey from a local farmer's market or a local beekeeper. That way, you know you are getting the real deal and you're supporting a local business.
