For those who skipped geography class, the Strait of Hormuz is a narrow stretch of water that acts as one of the main highway for oil. Right now, way too much of the world's energy has to squeeze through this narrow body of water. If anything goes wrong there, which happens, because people love to argue, the global energy market basically has a panic attack. In fact, recent disruptions have been so chaotic that over a billion barrels of oil have been left stranded, costing the global market roughly 100 million barrels a week. That’s a lot of unrefined energy just sitting around doing nothing!
Instead of sending all their cargo through the narrow strait, the UAE is fast tracking a new project called the West East Pipeline.
The master plan is simple, pump the oil across the country via a giant underground pipe directly to Fujairah, a port city sitting safely on the outside coast. It’s the infrastructure equivalent of ordering delivery because you don’t feel like dealing with the parking lot at the grocery store.
According to the head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), this mega project is already 50% complete. They’ve put the pedal to the metal, aiming to have the whole thing up and running soon. They are projecting to double export capacity by 2027.
When this pipeline is finished, the UAE will be able to export up to 4 million barrels a day. By redirecting the flow, the UAE keeps the global economy moving even when the usual shipping lanes are experiencing a technical glitch.
Experts say that even if all regional issues vanished tomorrow, it would still take months for normal shipping routes to recover. This pipeline ensures the oil keeps flowing despite the drawbacks.
The next time you are stuck in a long line at the drive thru, don't stress, don't argue, just build a multibillion dollar bypass straight to your nuggets. By 2027, global energy shipping is going to look a whole lot different with a long giant pipe and a refusal to get stuck in traffic.
