Imagine galloping at full speed across the desert sands on a magnificent Arabian horse. You let go of the reins, pull back a bow string and pierce a target dead center. For Nora Aljabr, it’s just another day on the fields. As Saudi Arabia's first certified female mounted archery trainer, Nora is reviving an ancient tradition that was nearly lost to the history books. Her viral journey is inspiring thousands of women across the Middle East and the globe to pick up a bow and mount a horse The incredible story of how a hobby turned into a cultural revolution.
1,000 year old lost art, mounted archery and horseback sword fighting were once essential skills in the Arabian Peninsula, but over centuries, the practice became a buried tradition. Nora’s journey into the history books didn’t start overnight. While she fell in love with horseback riding at just nine years old, her path truly shifted when she began diving into Arabic manuscripts. One specific book, written around 1,000 years ago, detailed the exact mechanics of Arab archery from how to handcraft a bow to the precise art of shooting from a galloping steed. Instead of just reading about history, Nora decided to recreate it.
To perfect her craft, Nora traveled to Istanbul to train at Mamluk Academy. Upon returning to Saudi Arabia, she participated in a the Ministry of Sports certification course alongside the country's top male riders. Out of the elite group, Nora emerged as the only woman to graduate as a certified horseback archery trainer. Today, she trains both local women and tourists at her center in Dammam, proving that strength, focus, and equestrian mastery have no gender limits. "It developed something inside me, strength, courage and confidence," Nora shared in an interview with Harper's Bazaar. "I never developed fear from the number of times I fell. I just kept on riding."
Through her training programs, she is passing down the discipline of the sport to the next generation. Mounted archery requires a unique harmony between human and horse, riders must guide their animal entirely with their core and legs while keeping their upper body steady enough to aim. By teaching self defense, focus and history, Nora isn't just teaching a sport, she is building a community of fearless, confident women. Nora Aljabr is leading the charge, one arrow at a time.
