When you think of a gourmet, mouthwatering burger, the last place you’d expect to find it is inside a gas station. But that is exactly where one of Metro Detroit’s favorite burger joint got its start!
Taystee’s Burgers has built a reputation for serving up some of the most creative and delicious burgers in Michigan. Many fans have no idea that this gourmet empire actually launched inside a BP gas station on Ford Road in Dearborn.
The star behind the grill is Ali Jawad, who took a leap of faith and started the business when he was just 21 years old. When his grandfather was remodeling the family gas station, Ali saw a golden opportunity. He was determined to flip that cheap, premade burgers into serving premium, ultra fresh, 1/3 pound halal beef patties stacked high with creative toppings. Word quickly spread that this wasn't your average gas station burger stop.
Customers fell in love with Taystee’s wild menu, which includes...
•The Hawaiian Burger, a sweet and savory masterpiece topped with grilled pineapple and rich teriyaki sauce.
•The Volcano Burger, packed with heat, featuring fresh grilled jalapenos and actual crunchy jalapeno poppers right on the burger.
•The Notch Yo Burger (Top Favorite), which features an onion bun stuffed with lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, jalapenos, beef bacon, three different types of cheese (American, Swiss and Pepperjack), smooth nacho cheese, mayo, hot sauce and Nacho Cheese Doritos for a perfect crunch!
The gas station spot became so crowded with hungry fans that Taystee’s officially outgrew its original home. To keep up with the huge demand, Ali expanded and opened a restaurant location in Dearborn Heights (26350 Ford Rd.). The vibrant new space features plenty of room to sit down to enjoy your meal, complete with an awesome wall mural dedicated entirely to their famous burgers.
The best part? You can still visit the original BP gas station spot for a delicious burger or head over to their larger Dearborn Heights location to experience the full menu in style.
